Police departments across the nation are mourning the loss of five Dallas police officers after a sniper ambush last night. New Bedford is no exception.

Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro tells WBSM News what happened in Texas was a terrible event felt by the entire country. "When the folks that have sworn to protect and serve our society are attacked like that, you see a breakdown in society that's just terrible," said Cordeiro. "My heart just goes out to them. It's incredible and terrible."

Cordeiro says he's telling New Bedford police officers to be vigilant as they go throughout the city.

The ambush took place during what had been a peaceful protest against the fatal shootings of two black men this week at the hands of law enforcement officers. Cordeiro says he has not heard of any planned demonstrations in New Bedford, but asks anyone planning one to be peaceful and respectful.
