NEW BEDFORD — Members of the New Bedford Police Department gang unit arrested two people Wednesday as part of proactive patrols in the South End. According to police, the patrols were in response to concerns from residents about suspicious activity.

Police say that shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, they approached a group of individuals in the area of 37 Acushnet Avenue, and found Jovanie Duren, 19, of 36 Katherine Street, Apartment 2, in possession of a small amount of crack cocaine. As officers attempted to place him under he arrest, he resisted.

That's when police say 21-year-old Samuel Santana of 35 Larch Street attempted to interfere with the arrest. He was charged with interference with a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
