Congressman Bill Keating is getting the support of local public safety workers as he runs for re-election.

The New Bedford Fire and Police unions endorsed the congressman at The Black Whale restaurant on Pier Three Thursday afternoon.

It's the first time in a number of years that the Police Union has endorsed a congressional candidate. Police Union President Hank Turgeon says the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing brought to light how federal support can effect local police departments.

Keating was very appreciative of the double-endorsement, and pledged to continue to work to strengthen fire and police departments with funding for jobs and equipment.

One of the latest polls from Emerson University puts Keating ahead of his Republican Challenger John Chapman by three points, 47% to 44%.
