NEW BEDFORD - The City of New Bedford is offering free two-hour parking on some sections of Union Street downtown, as well as some surrounding sections, as road improvement work continues.

Union Street, the downtown’s main thoroughfare, is being updated and improved and currently undergoing significant road repairs. In order to alleviate some of the impact on local businesses in the area, the City is offering free two-hour parking on some sections of Union Street and several of its cross streets.

The free two-hour parking spots are clearly marked with red bags over the parking meters indicating the two hours of free use. The sections of Union Street affected will change based on the location where construction is occurring at the time, so those in search of parking on Union Street and nearby streets should look for the red bagged meters.
The City collaborated with members of Downtown New Bedford, Inc. and local merchants to offer a way to mitigate the effects of prolonged road improvements on local businesses. Free two-hour parking will be offered on sections of Union Street and surrounding streets for the duration of this construction season.

Questions regarding the two hour free parking program for Union Street road improvements should be directed to the Traffic Commission Office at (508) 961-3153. The Traffic Commission Office is located at 51 Elm Street and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
