A New Bedford man is under arrest after fleeing from Fairhaven Police in an unregistered car.

Police say Officer Wayne Mello ran the plates of a 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo headed east on Howland Road Monday morning, and found the vehicle's registration had been revoked and the car was uninsured. When Officer Mello attempted to stop the vehicle, the car quickly took off, leading police on a chase on Main Street that reached speeds of 80 miles per hour.

Police called off the chase and later found the car unoccupied in the Century House parking lot in Acushnet. The suspect was seen nearby, running through a number of backyards. Police soon caught up with him in the area of Main and Boylston Streets, and arrested him after he was subdued by use of a TASER.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Travis Santiago was charged with multiple motor vehicle violations and resisting arrest. He was also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for narcotics violations.
