A pedestrian hit by a car in New Bedford over the weekend is recovering.

Police say 37-year-old Osvaldo Correia was struck by an SUV as he was walking Saturday night at Cove Road and Stapleton Street.

He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries, but is now listed in fair condition.

Police say the driver stayed on the scene and called 911. No charges have been filed.

Detective Captain Steve Vicente says Correia may have been on his cellphone while crossing the street.
