A New Bedford man is found dead in his North End home.

New Bedford Police Spokesman Lt. Amos Melo tells WBSM News the man's employer had contacted police Wednesday afternoon after he had not shown up to work over the past few days.

Police went to the man's home at 511 North Front Street to find the 50-year-old man dead in his bedroom of a suspected heroin overdose. Paraphernalia consistent with heroin use was found near the man's body.

Lt. Melo says it appears the man had been dead for at least a day.

The third floor apartment was shared by two friends of the man, who were not aware of his condition until police arrived at the apartment.

The State Medical Examiner has taken custody of the body and toxicology results are pending.
