More information has been released regarding a man who was crushed by a car Monday afternoon.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says that at around 4 p.m. officers were sent to the area of Walnut St. and Acushnet Ave. regarding a vehicle that had fallen on a male.

Officers arrived on scene to find the victim, identifed only as a 49-year-old New Bedford man, underneath a Honda Accord that had the front passenger tire removed.

Vicente says the victim was working underneath the car that was not his own and the car was supported by a hydraulic lift jack and two portable jack stands.

It appears that one of the jacks gave way and the vehicle came down on top of the victim.

The man was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Vicente says the incident is under investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday and the incident does not appear suspicious at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Michael Carrier at 508-991-6300 ext. 79512.
