A New Bedford man is facing charges after a gas station was robbed Thursday night.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says officers were sent to HI-Lo gas station at 2790 Acushnet Ave. around 10 p.m. over reports of an armed robbery.

The suspect, identifed as 26-year-old Mark Omer Desrosiers, allegedly entered the store with a knife while wearing a black ski mask and sunglasses.

Vicente says Desrosiers then demanded money from the register before grabbing the entire cash tray and fleeing on foot.

Witnesses followed him and later found the cash tray on Victoria St.

The knife was recovered after being dropped at the scene and the clothes used in the robbery were found at a relative's house that he initially fled to.

Vicente says that at around 1 a.m. Friday officers were responding to suspicious activity on the 1200 block of Church St. where they found a suspect matching the description of the robbery suspect and took Desrosiers into custody.

Desrosiers was scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning in New Bedford district court on a charge of armed robbery while masked.
