A New Bedford man was arrested for cutting wires on the alarm system and attempting to break into the Walgreens Pharmacy at 1737 Acushnet Ave. Monday night.

Michael Alves, 27, of New Bedford was charged with malicious destruction of property $250 or more, carrying weapons on his person, possession of class E substance (Xanax), destruction of property $250 or less, interference with a police officer/escape from custody and a warrant arrest.

Police responded to a report of break in progress at Walgreens. A witness reported he cut the wires on an alarm system.

During booking, Alves slipped free of his handcuffs and attempted to run out, but was caught before he could get away.

The incident was reported at about 10:30 p.m.
