A New Bedford man is facing drug charges in District Court, after police say he was caught trying to swallow 20 bags of heroin.

Narcotic detectives went to Curtis Smith's State Street home on Monday night, but he was not there.  Police however spotted Smith leaving a neighborhood store,  and when they approached him, he ran.

Capt. Steve Vicente tells WBSM News, Police grabbed the suspect after a brief foot chase, but noticed he was chewing something.  Detectives then make him spit it out, and recovered 20 baggies containing heroin, worth about $1,000 on the street.

Smith is charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute and resisting arrest.
