NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) _ A Massachusetts jury has awarded $300,000 to a man who said his sixth-grade Catholic school teacher in Massachusetts sexually assaulted him in the mid-1980s when he was 10.

The unidentified man's attorneys say the New Bedford jury made the award last month.

He alleged in a 2009 lawsuit that Albert Vaillancourt, a long-time teacher at Notre Dame School in Fall River, sexually abused him when he was a child.

Vaillancourt was subsequently placed on leave from his teaching and youth group responsibilities. He denied the allegations and was never criminally charged.

The man's lawyers said a second person testified that Vaillancourt also sexually abused him during that time.

Vaillancourt's lawyer, Frank O'Boy, said he is appealing the verdict. A judge rejected O'Boy's motion to overturn the verdict last week.
