NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police narcotics unit took a loaded gun off the street Tuesday, July 17 following an investigation that led to an arrest.

Narcotics detectives learned through their investigation that an individual might be in possession of an illegal firearm. Police observed the individual riding in a vehicle and stopped the car at Pope and Cottage streets. As detectives attempted to stop the vehicle, the front seat passenger fled from the vehicle on foot, carrying what appeared to be an item concealed in cloth. He was apprehended in a driveway in the 500-block of Cottage Street where he tossed the item. Detectives determined the item was a .40 caliber Pietro Beretta with one round of .40 caliber ammunition in the chamber and an additional five rounds of .40 caliber ammunition in the magazine. The firearm had an obliterated serial number.

Trey Jordan Martin, 22, of 1599 Braley Road, Apt. 68, New Bedford, was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, defacing a firearm serial number and carrying a firearm without a license.

He was arraigned Wednesday July 18 in Third District Court and ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Monday July 23.
