A New Bedford man is under arrest in connection with an explosion set off in Freetown early this morning.

Freetown Police Chief Carlton Abbott says the explosion went off at about 4am on Slab Bridge Road near Profile Rock, started a small fire, and shook a house nearly 200 yards away.

Upon arriving at the scene, Freetown Police found the remnants of a mattress and other debris. A State Police Bomb Squad unit and crime scene personnel responded to the area as well.

A BOLO for a male seen earlier that morning on Chace Road driving a truck with a mattress secured to the roof was broadcast to local police departments.

New Bedford and State Police located the vehicle near the suspect's home after 6am this morning, and arrested 25-year-old Derek Faisca-Ribeiro of Bates Street.

Faisca-Ribeiro has been questioned by the FBI, ATF, State and Freetown Police in relation to the incident.

He's being arraigned today in Fall River Superior Court on a number of charges related to the possession and detonation of an explosive device.

Faisca-Ribeiro has no criminal record, but was separated from the military in 2011 for misconduct.
