Remnants of a long-gone industry will once again take to the seas in New Bedford this weekend.

The 7th annual Azorean Whaleboat Regatta begins Friday morning in Clark's Cove, with rowers from the Azores and local teams racing in authentic whaleboats.

Victor Pinheiro, President of the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society tells WBSM News New Bedford and the Azores are forever connected by their pasts.

The races take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with an awards ceremony Sunday evening.

The newest addition to this year's regatta is the Dabney Cup, a tournament that pits Azorean whaleboats against the American "Yankee" vessels.
