The City of New Bedford has sworn in twelve new police officers onto the force.

The dozen freshman officers were sworn in during a ceremony at City Hall yesterday, and six more officers are scheduled to be sworn in later this month.

Councillor at Large Brian Gomes, Chair of the Council's Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee tells WBSM News along with the new hires, three much-needed resource officer positions will be filled.

Gomes says the new officers will bring renewed energy and youth to the department.

Five of the newly hired officers are being funded for three years through a $750,000 Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant.
