New Bedford High School is now one of nine schools in the state of Massachusetts to offer its students a capstone diploma.

According to South Coast Today.com, “the program focuses on inquiry, research and writing skills that will boost student’s chances into getting into top colleges.”

There are currently 16 Advanced Placement courses at the school. With the addition of the new capstone designation, 18 AP classes will be offered next year.

The capstone diploma program is through College Board, a nonprofit organization that connects students to colleges.

Mayor Jon Mitchell stated that we are trying to create opportunity for families who live in the city. The AP program at New Bedford High School can offer that opportunity for families who really want to see their kids take off.

However, Dr. Lawrence Finnerty raised concerns that the school may create a system that may divide the New Bedford High School student body.

Finnerty stated that "you can get a capstone diploma, regular diploma, but there is still that other kid in urban centers who comes to school, tries hard, passes all classes. Hope we didn’t make mistake by cutting kids off from their future if they can’t quite make that."
