Elected officials from New Bedford and Fairhaven and the Army Corps of Engineers joined in a celebration Thursday of the 50th anniversary of the start of construction of the New Bedford-Fairhaven Hurricane Barrier.  Col. Chuck Samaris of the Army Corps says the barrier may look like a pile of rocks, but its a well-constructed pile of rocks still protecting people and property today.

The barrier was completed in 1966 at a cost of nearly $19 million.  Officials say it would cost about a billion dollars today.
