The New Bedford -Fairhaven Bridge is being shut down to motor vehicles on Sunday for a two week period.

The Sate Department of Transportation says the bridge will close from Sunday, March 30th to Saturday, April 12th so contractors can make structural steel repairs to the bridge's floor beams.

While the work is being done, the bridge will remain open to vessels.

The latest closure has prompted Mayor Jon Mitchell to call  for construction of a new bridge to connect New Bedford and Fairhaven.  Mitchell says the current bridge is inconvenient for motorists, and needs repairs too often.

State officials say work crews will be on the job around the clock to get the work done as quickly as possible.
