New Bedford continues to see improvements in energy efficiency thanks to a municipal performance contract with Seimens Energy.

Officials from Seimens and the city toured some of the improvements from the first phase of the project Monday, including new lighting, windows, boilers and cooling systems in many of the city's 96 municipal buildings.

Mayor Jon Mitchell said the initiative is an example of finding creative ways to save both money and energy.

"It's a reflection of how New Bedford is really thinking outside the box to deal with both it's financial constraints but also to be forward leading in our new energy economy," Mitchell said.

The costs of the over $50 million in energy efficiency retrofits will be covered by the savings they provide.
