The New Bedford City Council held its first "Celebration Meeting" Thursday evening to recognize exemplary members of the community.

The new special meeting devised by Council President Linda Morad dedicates the first Thursday of the month to honoring constituents, while no longer interfering with official council business.

"Focusing on the celebration of the great events in our community is very positive," said Morad. "I think the official meeting now focuses on the business of the council."

The practice of presenting official city citations and resolutions was previously done at the beginning of regular council meetings, adding usually an extra hour while pushing back the remaining business.

During the first meeting, several people were recognized including members of the Department of Public Infrastructure, students from Global Learning Charter School, and organizers behind the Fill the Bus Christmas Toy Drive. March was also resolved to be Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month and National Women's History Month.

The next celebration meeting will be held on April 7.
