NEW BEDFORD - Two young boys, both age 12 of New Bedford, have suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car while riding a motorized scooter near the South End.

New Bedford Police say the accident took place at the intersection of Blackmer and South Second Streets at 8:55 p.m. Saturday when a car struck the boys on a scooter and immediately left the scene. The driver was headed north on South Second Street and did not have a stop sign at the intersection.

The boys were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident and suffered serious injuries as a result. They were both transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

The vehicle that hit the boys is described as a silver or gray sedan, possibly an Acura. The car sustained heavy front end damage as a result of the crash.
