New Bedford Attempted Armed Robbery

There was an attempted armed robbery Tuesday night in the north end of New Bedford. A 16 year old juvenile walked into Tienda Centro American store on Acushnet Avenue, brandishing a small firearm and demanded money from the register from the 15 year old female clerk. She called her mother from the back room and the two women began screaming. The suspect tried to pry open and then take the cash register but when he was un successful and fled running on Acushnet Ave. About an hour later, after looking at surveillance video, police caught up with the suspect walking near Acushnet and Coffin Ave and brought him back to the store where he was identified by the victims. He was arraigned in district court for attempted armed robbery and assault by means of a dangerous weapon. Due to his age, he was not identified by police.
