State Representative Antonio Cabral has included funding for fisheries research at a local institution in the next fiscal year's proposed state budget.

The $450,000 included in the budget proposal would be allocated for the University of Massachusetts' School of Marine Science and Technology.

Cabral tells WBSM News the funds would allow the school to continue research into accurate fish population assessment, "We made the case again this year how important this was for the state to play a role around research in order for us to get some good data, in order for us to really present to NOAA and making sure the numbers are correct."

The House of Representatives will finish debating the budget this week, and will be sent to the Senate for consideration before it heads to the Governor's desk for approval.
