For the second year in a row, New Bedford High School has special classes in the summer for seniors who for one reason or another, fell a handful of credits short of graduating in June.

Some twenty-five seniors completed those classes earlier this summer, and were awarded diplomas during a Graduation ceremony Thursday night.

Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin said the summer program is " a different way that our kids can meet the expectations, keeping the standards high and expectations high, but giving them a different route."  Durkin added, "I do believe at times, we get stuck in only one way kids can succeed."

Durkin says the students were an example of persistence and perseverance, saying many of their stories were "inspiring."  She also praised staffers at the high school for keeping the student's focus on getting their diploma, even if it took a little longer.
