Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin says she's generally satisfied with how New Bedford teachers faired in the second year of a statewide evaluation program.

The numbers were released Thursday by the Massachusetts Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Seven percent of New Bedford's teachers were rated exemplary, 82% were proficient, 8.3% were judged to need improvement, and 2.8% were rated unsatisfactory. Those ratings were slightly below the statewide averages.

Dr. Durkin tells WBSM News, New Bedford is doing all it can to improve the skills of teachers.

Durkin says the most important work they do is making sure teachers have the right skills and the appropriate feedback, to do the best job they can in front of their students.
