A new bill heading to a public hearing at the statehouse could ban all Native American mascots from Massachusetts schools.

The bill will be heard at 10 a.m. on Tuesday (June 6) by the Legislature's Education Committee and would prohibit any public school in Massachusetts from using a Native American mascot.

A Native American is defined in the bill as a

name, symbol or image that depicts or refers to an American Indian tribe, individual, custom or tradition that is used by a public school as a mascot, nickname, logo, letterhead or team name."

The bill gives specific examples including "Indians," "Indianettes," "Chieftains" and "Braves."

So do you think this bill should pass?
