Police departments across the country, and here on the Southcoast, will take part in the ninth National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

The event seeks to "provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications."

Mattapoisett Police Captain Anthony Days says it is essential that these drugs be properly disposed of, and says that simply tossing these medications in the trash can create many problems.

Days says these drugs will be accepted with no questions asked.

Mattapoisett Police will collect unwanted medications at the police station on 64 County Road from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. New Bedford, Fall River, and Westport will also participate.
