BOSTON — Pharmacies in Massachusetts can now dispense opioid overdose reversal medication without a prescription.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Health, the state has issued a standing order for the distribution of Naloxone, which is also known by the brand name Narcan.

Prior to today, individual pharmacies had to obtain special approval to dispense of the drug without a prescription.
