As we begin our new "Summer Beach Reads" series, we encourage our listeners to check out new books from well-known authors every Tuesday morning. Our first featured author is Nantucket's very own Nancy Thayer.

Her new book "Nantucket Sisters" was released last month and we were eager to hear her explain the story line. The journey of two childhood friends (Emily and Maggie) takes twists and turns as they grow into adulthood.

Emily is a wealthy girl from Manhattan who meets Maggie while vacationing on Nantucket with her parents. Emily's mother disapproves of the friendship because Maggie comes from a poor family, but the girls create a bond rooted in their imagination and desire to play.

Later, the girls discover how growing up entails matters of the heart and unexpected changes. Thayer commented on the love story between the characters and the coast. Her favorite review on Amazon said the book is "a romance story with an ecology vibe."

Nancy Thayer has written 24 books since publishing her first novel at the age of 35. She loves writing about family and of course, Nantucket. You can check out her website and "like" her on Facebook for a list of her other works.
