The New Bedford Historical Society and the New Bedford NAACP hosted a breakfast commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act Saturday at the Waypoint Event Center downtown.

Special guest speaker Enola Aird is founder and president of Community Healing Network, Inc. which is aimed at eliminating the devaluation of black lives around the world.

She says her speeches and presentations tend to shed some new light on the issues at hand.

Local modern day civil rights leaders were presented awards for the accomplishments they've achieved in the community.

Award recipients included former UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Jean MacCormack, John "Buddy" Andrade, Jose Soler, Sam Ackah, and Rev. Mark Green.
