The bond between the historic 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and New Bedford can not be separated. On Jan. 30, people from the local Artist-In-Residence program invite the community to their Meet The Artist event that will launch its premier project, a mural paying tribute to the 54th Regiment.

The public is invited to meet artist Jared Bader of Philadelphia, who was selected from a national call, and see what the mural will look like when completed. The new mural will be displayed in the national park historic district on the west wall of Freestone's City Grill, the exact location where local men enlisted for the Civil War.

The proposed mural will compliment another mural created by noted Fairhaven artist Sig Haines. The reception will take place from 5 - 7 p.m. at Artworks in downtown New Bedford. This project is in partnership with the New Bedford Historical Society, UMass Dartmouth, Artworks, and the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.
