Like the Yin and Yang. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell finds himself in a police pickle. For months he's boasted that the city is a safer place to live and work. Mitchell often touts police crime statistics to support his notion. The numbers tells us that in many categories crime is down.

Enter the New Bedford City Council. They're firing off a letter to the Mayor asking him to budget more tax dollars for police and police training. One councilor preaching that more foot patrols or community policing will make residents feel safer. Another wants the Police Commissioner to work on plans for using drones in high crime areas.

This public safety debate is a perception vs. reality issue.
