The Labor Department says the American economy added 217-thousand non-farm jobs in May. The unemployment rate remained steady at six-point-three percent. The number of unemployed people remained steady at nine-point-eight million.

Employment increased in professional and business services, health care, food services and transportation.

The 217-thousand job increase was slightly below expectations, though many had expected the unemployment rate to increase slightly.
