Mitchell, Coakley Urge Federal Court To Approve AVX Settlement

Mayor Jon Mitchell is joining the Attorney General and AVX Corporation in asking a Federal Court to approve a $366 million settlement with AVX to remove pcb's from New Bedford Harbor. 

The funding, if approved, would enable the cleanup to be finished within five to seven years, compared to 40 years without it. 

Mayor Mitchell says New Bedford has waited long enough to have a clean harbor.....

Environmental groups have argued that the funding is not enough and there should be a re-opener clause in the agreement that would require AVX to pay more, if the money runs out. 

Mitchell says AVX will never agree to a reopener clause, and ultimately, the Federal Government is responsible for the harbor cleanup.
