A Barnstable County jail inmate who walked away from a work detail last week was found over the weekend hiding in the basement of his sister's house.

Sheriff's deputies picked up 60-year-old David Nickerson shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday, hiding in the Harwich home.

Sheriff James Cummings tells the Cape Cod Times deputies were checking relatives homes and the sister's husband told them where to find Nickerson.

The Brewster man was nine months into a two-year sentence for his third offense of drunken driving and was eligible for parole in February.

Cummings says Nickerson will now have to serve his entire sentence and will no longer be allowed on work details. He also faces escape charges.

His sister and brother-in-law may also be charged.
