Years ago, do you remember the tragic and fatal car accident nearby that involved a young mother and U.S. Hockey Gold Medalist, Jim Craig, who was drunk behind the wheel? It was a terrible fall from grace for Craig. Well, now there's another new chapter in the Jim Craig story.

As one of the key members of the 1980 U.S. hockey team that won the "Miracle on Ice" game against the Soviet Union and then went on to win the gold is now planning to auction off his gold medal, Jim Craig, who was the team's goalie and is now a motivational speaker, said in a news release from Leland's auction house, "I'm selling my 'Miracle on Ice' collection to ensure a healthy financial future for my children and grandchildren." In addition to his gold medal, Craig is also auctioning off the U.S. flag he famously had draped around his shoulders after the team won the gold medal as he skated around searching in the stands for his father. Other items in the collection include the jersey he wore in the game against the Russians, and his mask, skates, stick and pads. The auction began yesterday (May 17th) and will end one month later on June 17th, with Craig and Lelands hoping the collection will sell for more than $5 million.

I am troubled, in general, about American Olympians auctioning off their medals. To hear Jim Craig is now selling off his gold medal and the flag he famously had draped around his shoulders is a very sad loss in a day and age that we need to be inspired by 'miracles.'
