Home Depot's recent breach may have affected 56 million credit cards.

An investigation into the breach revealed cyber-criminals used malware to evade detection.

The home improvement retailer has confirmed the malware has been eliminated from its U.S and Canadian networks.

The company is taking steps to protect U.S consumers by offering enhanced encryption of payment data and will offer the same to Canadian stores early next year.
