WAREHAM — A Middleboro man faces charges after he was caught breaking into a home on Saturday night.

Wareham Police say at about 10:00 p.m., Officers Blaise Lalli and Jennifer Braley responded to a residence on Highland Court for a breaking and entering in progress.

The caller said that they had pulled in their driveway and observed a male walking down a set of stairs that led to an apartment above a detached garage. The suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Michael Alfonso, was also carrying a large shopping bag and ran back up the stairs when he saw the caller. Upon arrival, officers noticed his sneakers near the top of the steps.

Alfonso retreated into the apartment after police ordered him to come down the stairs. Officers then attempted to make entry, but Alfonso had locked the door, barricading himself inside, refusing police orders to open the door and surrender.

As a result, officers forced the door open and after a brief search located Alfonso hiding under a pool table. After an investigation, it was determined the suspect had taken multiple items valued at over $1,000 and put them in the shopping bag before being apprehended.

Alfonso is charged with break and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony and larceny from a building. He is being held on $5,000 cash bail and is expected to be arraigned at Wareham District Court on Monday morning.
