The Friends of Middleborough Cemeteries will be having a free cemetery tour on September 25.

According to South Coast Today.com, the first burials were in the early 1710’s, and there are hundreds of colonial era headstones to be seen. Each stone tells a story of an early resident of the Town. Many were the sons and daughters of the Plymouth Pilgrims. Over 75 Revolutionary War veterans are buried here.

The original center of Middleboro does have a historic graveyard. In colonial times, the center of Middleboro was on a “green” and its official community church was there along with the town meeting house and a tavern that was a stage coach stop. All of these were located on what is now called Route 105, where we now can find the Church at the Green and The Cemetery at the Green.

Jeff Stevens, who is a local historic cemetery enthusiast, will present the tour.

If you would like to join in this special event, come to the Route 105 exit off Route 44 in Middleboro by 2:00 pm on September 25.  Parking is available in the parking lot of the Church at the Green. The group will form in front of the church and cross the road over to the historic burial grounds.
