New Bedford residents reading the 2016 Old Farmer's Almanac may find themselves in a depression if they believe the Almanac's prediction for this winter: above average snow and very cold! So many South Coast residents are still bristling from the record 2015 snowfall that buried us and all but extinguished the area economy. However, meteorologists and weather scientists are ripping the publication's unsubstantiated forecasts, warning consumers to take it with a grain of salt.

Meteorologists and knowledgeable science bloggers have wasted no time in condemning the Almanac's soothsaying. Some said the Almanac's foretelling is as accurate as a Magic 8 ball and a print version of a boardwalk psychic. I've heard before now, that the Old Farmer's Almanac is to meteorology what astrology is to the science of astronomy. Weather forecasting is a rigorous and quantitative science steeped in physics, advanced math, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. In other words, weather forecasting is everything the Old Farmer's Almanac is not.
