Menino Suspends Cancer Treatments

Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is suspending his cancer treatment and a recently-launched tour in support of his memoir, ``Mayor For A New America.''

In a statement Thursday, Menino says he wants to spend more time with family and friends as he fights this ``terrible disease.''

The 71-year-old Menino was diagnosed with cancer a month after leaving office. At the time, he said the cancer had metastasized and spread to his liver and lymph nodes.

Menino's spokeswoman Dot Joyce said Thursday that the ex-mayor remained hospitalized after suffering dehydration likely related to cancer treatment. Menino was admitted last Thursday to Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Menino is the city's longest serving mayor. He decided not to seek re-election in 2013 and currently serves as co-director for Boston University's Initiative on Cities.
