Mayor’s Letter To Fisheries Panel Seeks Help For Fishermen

With the New England Fisheries Management Council set to reduce groundfish catch allocations for the fishing year that begins May 1, Mayor Jon Mitchell has fired off a letter to the Council, asking that it take some steps to assist New England fishermen.
In his letter, the Mayor is offering five suggestions to the Council, including requesting NOAA to develop a disaster relief program for fishermen….

The Mayor is also asking the council to pay more attention to the future of yellowtail flounder, an important species in the Port of New Bedford.
The Mayor is asking for the Woods Hole Science Center and the UMass Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology in New Bedford to survey the resource and report back to the Council.
