Mayor Names Committee To Bring Olympic Sailing To Buzzards Bay

There are still many hurdles to clear, but Olympic Sailing may be coming to New Bedford.

Mayor Jon Mitchell on Wednesday announced the formation of a steering committee to develop a proposal to bring the 2024 Olympic Sailing competition to Buzzards Bay and New Bedford.

Mitchell says New Bedford may actually strengthen Boston's bid for the 2024 games.....

Mitchell says current plans call for any funding needed to be raised privately.

He says the committee has already made contact with "Boston 2024" about New Bedford's proposal. Mitchell said members of the committee have broad sailing experience, including one person who competed in the 2000 Olympic sailing trials.

Every year, Buzzards Bay host the annual Buzzards Bay Regatta, an event officials say is larger than an Olympic sailing competition.
