Mayor Jon Mitchell wants to change the name of a section of Route 18.

In a letter to the City Council, Mayor Mitchell is requesting the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway be changed to John. F. Kennedy Boulevard.

Mitchell tells WBSM News after the redesign from Elm street to Cove street, the new name is a better representation, "By calling it a boulevard, it will convey to people that it is part of the city; that it's a passable road. It's a crossable road. It'll help further our efforts to knit the downtown into the waterfront and vice versa."

Mitchell describes a boulevard as often being associated with a broad avenue usually lined with trees, grass, or flowers on the sides or in the middle.

The name change will be considered by the City Council at their next regular meeting on May 28th.
