Mayor Jon Mitchell wants to show his support for the parishioners of St. John the Baptist Parish in New Bedford. The Diocese of Fall River has announced the church will close on November 4, citing declining attendance and because the building itself needs more than a million dollars in repairs. Mayor Mitchell says however, the church's parishioners have worked hard over the past year.

The Diocese has suggested parishoners from St. John's could attend mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Rivet Street, less than a mile away. Earlier this month parishoners of St. John's demonstrated outside the bishop's residence in Fall River, urging him to reverse his position and keep their church open.
