Though most of his criminal activity centered around Boston, New Bedford has a notable link to James"Whitey" Bulger and Monday's verdict.

Before running for mayor, Jon Mitchell was a federal prosecutor on the FBI's Bulger task force, charged with locating Bulger and bringing him to justice.

Mitchell resigned from the task force just days before Bulger was found in California.

Mitchell tells WBSM News he's been following the trial, and commends the jury on their findings after dozens of hours of testimony.

Mitchell says the task force was often criticized for taking on the seemingly impossible task of finding Bulger.

Mitchell adds the efforts of the task force paid off Monday, and "Whitey" will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
