Mayor Jon Mitchell is hoping the efforts the city has taken to break into the offshore wind industry pay off.

The state announced Tuesday four additional leases of over 700,000 acres in Nantucket Sound to be used for offshore wind.

Mitchell says New Bedford is at a geographical advantage, and is working towards the infrastructure to further the industry, but it's not out of the question for energy developers to set up shop elsewhere.

Mitchell says with the additional leases, more developers of offshore wind may choose New Bedford as their base of operations, citing the city's Marine Commerce Terminal which is near completion.

The 742,000 acres will be offered up as four separate leases.
