The state's Commissioner of Education is visiting New Bedford on Thursday, stopping at two of the city's underperforming schools for meetings with teachers, administrators and parents.

Mitchell Chester will start his day visiting classroom at the Parker Elementary School, which the state has designated as a level five school or chronically underperforming.

Mayor Jon Mitchell says the School Department will welcome the Commissioner's input....

Mitchell Chester will also visit New Bedford High School, and later Keith Middle School. He'll also attend a School Committee meeting at 6pm.

Mayor Mitchell will not be meeting with the Commissioner on Thursday.  The Mayor will be attending a "Smart Cities" conference in White Plains, New York.  The Mayor is speaking at the conference about the success of "Green Energy" programs in New Bedford.
