Massachusetts Transgender Inmate Seeks Hair Removal

A convicted murderer who won a court order for taxpayer-funded sex-change surgery is asking a judge to order Massachusetts prison officials to provide electrolysis treatments.

Lawyers for Michelle Kosilek are scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court on Monday to ask Judge Mark Wolf to order the state Department of Correction to provide hair removal treatments. The department is appealing Wolf's ruling ordering sex-reassignment surgery.

Kosilek was born male and named Robert when convicted of the 1990 murder of his wife, Cheryl Kosilek.

Kosilek has received hormone treatments and is serving a life sentence as a woman in an all-male prison.

The 63-year-old Kosilek received seven electrolysis treatments in 2008. Prison officials discontinued the treatments, saying her remaining hair could be removed by shaving or using depilatories. (AP)
